MOSFET Selection for BLDC Motor Drivers

Choosing the right MOSFET is critical when designing a brushless DC (BLDC) motor driver. A poor MOSFET selection leads to overheating, low efficiency, and board failure.
Key Parameters:
1. On-Resistance (Rds(on)): Lower is better. For high-current motors, look for under 10 mOhm.
2. Gate Charge (Qg): Determines switching speed. Balance switching loss vs conduction loss.
3. Drain-Source Voltage (Vds): Choose at least 1.5x your bus voltage.
4. Continuous Current (Id): Size for 1.5x peak motor current.
5. Thermal Resistance: Use packages with exposed pads and adequate copper area.
Half-bridge layout: place MOSFET pairs close together, keep gate traces short, use a solid ground plane, and add decoupling capacitors near each bridge.
